He has also worked extensively in the concert hall, with such orchestras as the London Symphony, the Philharmonia, the London Philharmonic, and the BBC Concert. Rrecently he conducted the inaugural concert with the Royal Philharmonic to open their new London concert hall, and joined them again at the Royal Albert Hall with Bryn Terfel. Other artistes with whom he has collaborated include Liza Minelli, Maria Ewing, Sumi Jo, (the Korean soprano) Elaine Paige, Michael Crawford, Helen Sjöholm, Julian Lloyd-Webber, Charlotte Church, Al Jarreau, Sarah Brightman, Jerry Hadley, Bobby McFerrin, and Jose Carreras. David has worked and recorded worldwide, in many diverse cities – from Bangkok, to Budapest, Sydney to Stockholm, Tokyo to Johannesburg, Cologne to San Diego, Brisbane to Barbados. Needless to say he also enjoys working at home as well, conducting at the Royal Albert Hall, The Royal Festival Hall, Abbey Road and Air studios, and outdoor events such as the Hampton Court and Henley festivals.
David is the Principal Guest Conductor for the Danish Radio Sinfonietta. As such he has arranged and conducted the music for the 2 royal wedding celebrations, the opening of the bridge between Copenhagen and Malmo, and the commemoration of 9/11 in Copenhagen. More recently he conducted some lavish television presentations with Sissel Kyrkjebo (the Norwegian soprano), Simply Red, Katie Melua, and Westlife, and “Once Upon a Time” celebrating the bicentenary of Hans Andersen with Jean Michel Jarre.
David draws on the experience he gained early on in his career as keyboardist on such films as Superman, Return of the Jedi, Basic Instinct, Batman, and more recently Lord of the Rings. His writing and arranging takes him in diverse and contrasting areas. Numerous arrangements and orchestrations include work for Jose Carreras, Joan Rivers, Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Bryn Terfel, and Charles Aznavour. Notably he has acted as television arranger and musical director for Victoria Wood for many years. By contrast David composed the music which marked the laying of the foundation stone for the new Danmarks Radio building, and recently completed a full orchestral score for the new DVD Historien om en Mor; he has also just finished transcribing and writing an anthology of the music from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
David Firman lives in London with his wife Eileen, a research nursing sister. |
